Activity from Monaco 3A

Please find here below a short report of our (I1UWF and I1SCL) activity from Monaco 3A.
The idea to transmit from 3A began during a DCI activity from Ventimiglia, infact while making QSOs I was watching the mountains above Monaco and I said to myself: why not from 3A?
I tried to find a contact in Monaco and, via Giorgio IK1UWL who was already interested on the possibility to transmit from 3A, I reached Claude 3A2LF (ARM Secretary) who gave me all necessary information.
It is not easy to transmit from Monaco; room for antennas are limited due to the high density of houses that cover all available areas; there is a project to build up an artificial island, close to the famous Casino, to give the possibility to reach people to buy a house!
From radioamateur point of view is still available the car, that is the normal solution used to transmit from a Castle activity. I install usually my antenna (vertical or dipole) near the car; in Monaco this is not possible it must be above the car. The 40 m. and 80 m. were already utilized in several occasions so I decided to use 18 MHz and 14 MHz. What better than a MFJ three magnetic base and relevant whip? Gianni IW1QGR gave me its, I have arranged the whip (closed is 60 cm. long while opened is 3,60 m.) to reach 5 m., one quarter wave in 14 MHz. The vertical antenna is ready: adapting the size of the whip it can be tuned from 14 MHz to 28 MHz.
Location for the car, found with the help of Claude 3A2LF, was in a very high position, near to the Exotic Garden; it is well open towards East, South and West while is closed to North from a mountain.
Saturday the 29th of March immediately after lunch, together with Ovidio I1SCL, we moved to Monaco. We reached it in half an hour and at 13.45 UTC I began the first QRZ in 18 MHz with the call 3A/I1UWF; I was supported with spot on cluster from Sanremo OM, particularly from Mauro I1OQI who is also preparing the QSL.
I made QSOs with Eastern Europe OMs as HA, YO, DL, UA, some 4X and few Italians from zone 7, Brazil, and with Sanremo friends like I1OCQ, I1YST, I1OQI.
After one hour Ovidio I1SCL took the microphone moving to 14 MHz for the WPX Contest having good success.
At 16.00 UTC we ended operations and we went back home satisfied from the positive experience.
The whole operation was in pure Castle style: transfer by car, place the antenna, transmitting and return.
We had no problems with Monaco Authorities informed in advance by Claude 3A2LF.
I would like to make again, in a near future, a new 3A mini DX-pedition transmitting on WARC bands for few hours.
Equipment: ICOM 706, Car Battery, vertical antenna.
Thanks to everybody who gave me information (particularly I1JQJ and 3A2LF) and support during activity time. QSL via I1UWF.

Ciao Gianni, 3A/I1UWF
